Sweeter than sweet: Ferrari Roma becomes homeless

La nueva dolce vita: This is how Ferrari describes life with its all-new, roofless model. Meet the Ferrari Roma Spider!

This Ferrari Roma is no big surprise. The Portofino, Ferrari’s open-toed V8-nosed ‘slipper’, is of age and would slowly pass the baton to the Roma presented in 2020. It was only available as a coupé, and with this Spider, this model now really takes on all the tasks of the Portofino.

known numbers

Before we go into the unique selling points of this Ferrari Roma Spider, first the well-known work. As in the closed variant, the V8 in the Spider delivers 620 hp and 760 Nm. All power is sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The Ferrari Roma Spider sprints to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds. 6.3 seconds later he taps 200 km/h. The top speed is 320 km/h. In this respect, you do not make any compromises with this fabric hood, which we will come back to in a moment. However, this open variant is 84 kg heavier than the coupé.

The biggest news, however, is in the roof construction. The Ferrari Roma Spider has a fabric roof instead of steel. And that’s pretty special, because it’s been a while since Ferrari spooned a fabric top into an open-topped, front-engined model. That hasn’t happened since 1969. Then the Italians presented the 365 GTS4, and that was the last model with a front engine and a fabric top.

Fabric roof Ferrari Roma Spider

According to Ferrari, the fabric top has no disadvantages compared to a steel folding roof like the Portofino had. According to the manufacturer, the soundproofing is on the same level. The upside is that a fabric top looks a lot smarter, and that certainly applies to the Ferrari Roma Spider with the top down. In addition, customers can let off steam on this roof’s personalization list. For example, think of different fabrics and seams. Incidentally, the roof can be operated at speeds of up to 60 km/h. It takes 13.5 seconds to open or close the whole thing.

When driving with the top down, such a fabric roof also takes up less space than such a steel construction. As a result, there is adequate luggage space. The luggage compartment can also be reached from the second “row of seats”: between the seats there is a hatch that provides access to the luggage compartment. That measures 255 liters by the way.

Price

It is not yet known when the Ferrari Roma Spider will be delivered and what the model will cost in the Netherlands.
