The choice of powertrains and versions was already huge with the current BMW 5 Series, but the Germans are going to step it up again at the end of this year. It also appears as a fully electric variant, and then also as a station wagon if desired. But there is more!
BMW already gave a preview of the new and eighth generation of the 5 Series this week. It will debut in a few months and will take the power-of-choice principle (BMW philosophy that the customer can choose between one model but several powertrains) to a new level.
Electric station wagon
The new BMW 5 Series appears “only” with diesel and petrol engines as well as PHEV versions. Due to the flexibility of the platform, the Germans also deliver the model of this generation as an electric version. It bears the name i5 and is therefore part of BMW’s electric i family. We will also see this model immediately in a few months.

BMW needs a little longer to show the touring, the station wagon. This body variant will also be available as a fully electric i5. According to BMW, this is the first all-electric model in the station wagon segment. That’s not entirely true, because MG also supplies a compact station wagon with the 5 Series. That’s a different segment, but with the Porsche Taycan Sport and Cross Turismo, a premium station wagon has been driving around for a while.
New BMW M5
But there’s more to choose from. As with other i-models from BMW, those who opt for the electric i5 can choose between different variants. An M Performance model of the i5 will also appear. It will probably have the suffix M50 or M60, as is the case with the i4 and iX, for example. BMW has not yet reported on powertrains and battery packs. There will also be a new M5 with a combustion engine, but with hybrid technology on board. He also appears again as a touring!

In a few months we will know exactly what BMW has in store. What is certain is that the electric i5 will face a lot of competition in the coming years. Of course, Mercedes-Benz is already delivering the EQE, but more will soon be added to the range of electric station wagons. Audi is working on an A6 e-tron, and brands like Volkswagen and Nio also have a comparable car on their shelves.
