Dive into the price list: Hongqi E-HS9 – serious competition for “the Germans”?

It seems new brands are being introduced all the time. The luxury brand Hongqi will also try it in the Netherlands. What do you have in the house? We’ll find out by looking at the price list.

The first (for us) new brands from China were able to score with a (relatively) low entry price. For example, MG has already become a mainstream brand (albeit mainly with the ZS EV) and even the more expensive Lynk & Co are off to a good start. But what about in the higher price range? Will the consumer leave a common brand for a BYD or NIO? Hongqi goes one step further and even tries his hand at the premier class. In fact, the Hongqi E-HS9 is a direct competitor to, for example, the Audi Q7, BMW X7, Land Rover Range Rover and Mercedes-Benz GLS.

From the state limousine to the top segment

In contrast to these competitors, Hongqi cannot yet rely on a strong brand image here. In fact, you have to explain what you bought. However, Hongqi has plenty of experience, as it has been the brand of state limousines in China for decades and at some point also the regular luxury segment. It was already announced in 2020 that Hongqi will also come to Europe and the Netherlands. After the brand first made the crossing to Norway, it is now the turn of the Netherlands, among others.

To start with the Dutch question: does it cost? At least 83,590 euros for the business version. If you want a larger battery and more power, you have to pay at least 94,590 euros for the Executive. If you really want to have everything you need, you can take the Executive with you from 103,590 euros.

In addition to the three equipment variants – we’ll come back to the equipment in a moment – there are two powertrains. The first is equipped with an 84 kWh battery and two electric motors that together deliver 320 kW (435 hp) and 600 Nm. With the two engines you also have all-wheel drive. The range is 396 km (WLTP). If that’s not enough, you can opt for the 99 kWh battery pack. Then an output of 405 kW (551 hp) and a torque of 750 Nm are immediately available to you. The range is then 465 km (WLTP).

These are prices that are on a par with the mostly German competition. Is the equipment also of course. There are 21-inch alloy wheels, some Alcantara upholstery, lots of big screens, onboard WiFi, power tailgate, basically everything you’d expect in this top-of-the-line segment. Also in the area of ​​safety systems and driving assistants, of which the automatic parking function is particularly worth mentioning.

The difference between the equipment levels is not even very big, you should compare yourself on a detailed level which equipment you still want. The choice of version decides the level of luxury and equipment, because the list of options contains, above all, practical things. Welcome back.

Limited decoration options

Where Hongqi lets its competitors run wild is in the area of ​​visual decoration. Where almost everything is possible with the competition (as long as you pay, but still), with Hongqi you can only choose between different shades of grey, white and black. White is the standard color, black and gray cost no less than 1,495 euros extra. For 1995, white or gray body color is paired with a black roof. If you really want to stand out, go for the €2,495 option: a two-tone gray and white body. There are no wheel options. Replacing the all-black interior with a gray and white theme is a free option.

Then the individual options. For 199 euros you get a set of velor mats, for 350 euros the car is equipped with roof racks and for 1,495 euros you get a detachable trailer hitch. You get a charging cable for 399 euros, which we assume additionally charging cable. Notably, a “frunk” is also optional, an additional luggage compartment under the “bonnet”. In this case, it needs 75 liters and Hongqi wants 495 euros for it.

There are indeed wheel options, as a 21-inch winter wheel set and a 22-inch summer wheel set appear on the options list. They cost a whopping 4,599 and 4,699 euros respectively, and these are complete sets with alloy wheels. Additional vehicle safety options are also possible from 399 euros.
