This Mercedes-Benz G-Class has a bow tie. And it can open…

If you ever get behind the wheel of this Mercedes-Benz G-Class Mondo G project, someone next to you might pull up and yell, “Hey, your fly is open!” Because just look at what’s behind this SUV.

OK, that needs to be explained. Mercedes-Benz likes to connect with the art and fashion world. And especially with the G-Class. Because in 2020 Mercedes presented the project Geländewagen, a cooperation between the Stuttgart brand and Louis Vuitton.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class as fashion art

The Project Mondo G is the next art Mercedes. It was designed in collaboration with fashion brand Moncler, known primarily for their so-called puffer jackets. You can see its shape in the Project Mondo G’s tires and roof.

It’s easy to be cynical and sarcastic about the pompous language in the accompanying press release, so we won’t. It simply says – in too many words – that the rounded shapes of Moncler contrast with the angularity of the G-Class.

The huge zip running across the roof is a “handy indication of the versatility of [de Moncler-jas en de G-Klasse]”, we read. The glossy material used is meant to exude luxury.

Not a modern W463, but an old W464

By the way, Mercedes doesn’t seem to have used a modern G-Class, the W463, for this fashion art. Judging by the sharp rectangle of the grille, it’s a W464, a further development of the original G-Class, intended for defense among other things.

All-electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class

The current consumer model W463 will soon also have an all-electric version, the EQG. Mercedes showed a concept model of it two years ago.

The top model of the current G-Class series is the AMG G 63

The top model of the G-Class series is currently the AMG G 63 with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. The colossus delivers 585 hp and 850 Nm and accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds. Its top speed is 220 km/h as standard, optionally 240 km/h.
