The cost of electric cars will rise sharply in 2022

The total cost of an electric automobile have risen sharply in the past year. The purchase price of an average electric automobile increased again, while operating costs have also risen sharply due to higher energy prices and insurance premiums. This is reported by the ANWB in the Electric Driving Monitor, a consumer survey in ten European countries.

Electric driving has become significantly more expensive in 2022, but at 61.4 cents per kilometer it is still slightly cheaper than driving with a petrol engineautomobile (63.4 cents per km). In order to achieve the climate goals, however, electric driving must be accessible to more Dutch people. Affordability is key here.

The cost of electric cars has risen sharply

According to the ANWB, a quarter of Dutch people plan to have an electric car within five years automobile acquire. The average purchase price of a new electric automobile has risen to over 45,000 euros. At the same time, the price that consumers are willing to pay for a new electric drive automobile reduced to 29,000 euros. This leads to a price barrier of almost 17,000 euros.

Purchase grant to promote electric driving

With currently only ten models in the price range up to 35,000 euros, the consumer has little choice. The range of affordable models should therefore be expanded.

A purchase bonus will also continue to be necessary to promote electric driving. In 2022 this subsidy was still around 3500 euros, but this amount will be reduced to 2900 euros from this year.

Winter sports, electric car, snow

According to the ANWB, of the countries surveyed, the Netherlands and Denmark are leaders when it comes to electric driving. The number of electric cars in these two countries accounts for 3.7 percent and 4 percent of the total fleet, respectively. The Netherlands also has the highest number of public charging points. In other countries, the charging infrastructure often leaves a lot to be desired.
