Fan of the classic Citroën CX? Then you must see this C5 X!

Citrophiles fondly remember the 1970s when their brand was quirky and eccentric. The Citroën CX is a wonderful example of this. And apparently a few Chinese Youtubers think so too. For this they built a very special C5 X.

The C5 X is the flagship of the current Citroën range. Because the traditional sedan is no longer popular in the D segment, the French brand is taking a different approach with the C5 X. The model is a wonderful mix of station wagon, hatchback and SUV.

New Citroën CX based on the current C5 X

The creators of the Chinese YouTube channel Bai Ning’s Car Time see elements of the Citroën CX that they wanted to enlarge. They took the Dongfeng Citroën Versailles C5 X as the basis, as the car is called in China. Normally the car stands relatively high on its wheels, so the first thing the gentlemen did was lower the ground clearance.

Air suspension as an alternative to hydropneumatics

Citroën hasn’t supplied hydropneumatic suspension for a long time, so the Youtubers opted for an aftermarket air suspension that raises and lowers the C5 X by 10 centimeters.

Then they added “chrome” bumpers and enclosed wheels like the original CX had. We also know the covering of the rear wheel arches from the older Citroën.

Interior from the 70’s with dark and light brown tones

That last addition doesn’t work that way on the C5 X, in our opinion, due to the non-round crease around the wheel arches. What we think works is the C5 X’s modern interior, which has been given a wonderful seventies look through the use of dark and tan trim. The seat cover, with lots of buttons and a grid pattern, also fits the vibe.

Is it a copy of the modern Citroën CX?

Bai Ning’s Car Time made two videos about the awesome retro C5 X, but our Chinese isn’t what it used to be. So we do not know what is intended with the Citroën. Will more be done? Is it just a copy? It looks like the latter. Whether you should be happy with it or not is up to you.
