Autovisie is always looking for used cars for enthusiasts and therefore searches the listings on the sales site Gaspedal.nl. This time we found a Peugeot 508 SW PSE.
Autovisie drove the sports sedan and station wagon last year. “Every new sporty Peugeot has a tough job. It’s not so much the competition with competitors, but the challenge of following in the great footsteps of the forefathers. Legendary predecessors like the 309 GTI 16V have set the bar high.”
The Peugeot 508 SW PSE
“If the men and women of Peugeot Sport ‘GTI’ bet on something, it has to be really good, they owe it to their position. So expect something other than a GTI, that’s for sure with this PSE. These are different times and so our main question still flares up: where does the 508 PSE fit into this rich family heritage and how does it compare to the competition? According to the makers of the 508 PSE, it is the most powerful production Peugeot of all time. But that seems more like a marketing slogan than a technical promise.”
Like a bitcoin
“Peugeot Sport engineers also know very well that performance is very different in this (hybrid or fully) electric era. Back then, horsepower was hard “currency” and even had emotional value. The origin of current horsepower, like a bitcoin, is the elusive result of mining from combined power sources. Just as one no longer wants to exchange the euro for guilders (or perhaps French francs in this case), one must also immediately put this large amount of capital into perspective.”

“The 1.6 turbo petrol engine is now 200 hp. Add to that an 81 hp electric motor that is integrated into the automatic eight-speed gearbox and an 83 hp that “actuates” the rear axle, and you have an engine combination that spits out 360 hp and 530 Newton meters. As a front-wheel drive, the 508 PSE accelerates to the horizon, where it ‘walks’ into the limiter at 250 km/h.” The Peugeot sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds. “The French national anthem is also played after the intermediate sprints, because that’s where the 508 PSE proves to be fast: 80-120 km/h takes 3.5 seconds.”

“Is it just a ‘gilded lion’ or is it a fighter? It’s not about the shine, it’s about the driving experience. And it’s quite modified compared to the standard 508, which can’t be called a dusty sedan, both in looks and in handling. The 508 isn’t the benchmark in its segment like some of its predecessors, but cornering isn’t a struggle for it, it’s a matter of course. And the elegantly designed sedan handles it with care. The body control is good, but the feedback could be better was our first and last test verdict.”
