Green Saturday: Electric cars on their way to winter sports in front of charging stations

You are probably familiar with the “Black Saturday” phenomenon. It is a term for extreme traffic in European traffic. The “Green Saturday” is new. Electric cars stand still on these days. Not in a traffic jam, but in front of the charging station. For example in the direction of winter sports.

We didn’t pick the term “Green Saturday” from Dale’s, we invented it ourselves. The name describes the ever-growing problem.

Green Saturday, February 25th

The next “Green Saturday” is on February 25th. The international auditing and consulting organization KPMG warns of crowds at the charging station. Long traffic jams are expected at the charging points for electric cars, especially in the area around Frankfurt.

“In 2020, just before the outbreak of Covid-19, we saw waiting times of sometimes 75 minutes per charging station. Queues are expected to be shorter, 60 minutes maximum, but be prepared,” says KPMG’s Stijn de Groen. “Although the fast-charging network in Germany has been expanded, the number of Dutch people with electric cars has grown much faster.”

According to KPMG, between 8,000 and 10,000 electric cars will drive from the Netherlands to Austria in the coming holiday season. “Green Saturday” falls on the day when both the central and northern Netherlands have a public holiday and the southern Netherlands returns home.

The survey shows that 90 percent of travelers want to leave between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. This means that both traffic flows meet around Frankfurt.
