So many electric cars are actually sold

Electric cars have become an integral part of price lists. You can also see them driving around on the street more and more often. Although only a small proportion of cars are electric (3.1 percent), more and more electric vehicles are being sold.
Not surprisingly, electric vehicles are popular with new car buyers and lessee drivers. Finally, electric cars have tax advantages over petrol, diesel or LPG cars.
How many electric cars were sold in 2022?
Although EVs also have disadvantages, the type of powertrain is an issue. In 2021, 11 percent of all cars sold will be fully electric. In 2022, this rose to 26 percent. This emerges from figures from the RAI associations. At the end of 2022, 340,583 cars with a fully electric powertrain were driving around in the Netherlands.

Although electric cars are being sold more and more, most new car buyers or lessees opt for petrol ones. 38.5 percent of all new cars sold in 2022 will have a petrol engine on board. In 2021 it was still 46 percent.
It’s not just the proportion of petrol engines that’s declining. Logically, the number of diesels is also decreasing. Last year, diesel accounted for just 1.5 percent of all new car sales. In addition to more electric vehicles being sold, the proportion of (plug-in) hybrid vehicles is also increasing. This was 33 percent in 2021 and will be 36 percent in 2022.
Fewer cars sold
Just like in 2021, not many new cars were bought in 2022. This is mainly due to the shortage of chips and components as a result of the corona crisis and the war. In 2019, 446,114 new cars were registered. In 2022, only 312,129 new cars were registered in the Netherlands. Things seem to be improving now with the scarcity of parts and chips. Tesla has delivered a record number of electric cars in recent months.
