Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray is as fast as Bugatti Veyron

Chevrolet knocks down all the sacred cows. First removed from the Corvette’s nose and placed behind the front seats, the V8 now spoons an electric motor into the iconic supercar. This is the brand new E-Ray!

The current generation of the Chevrolet Corvette, the C8, is brand new. At the same time, it’s a bit of a dino, because its powertrain is rather old-fashioned. Although the engine is out of the nose for the first time in Vette history, the V8 still measures a whopping 6.2 litres. turbos? I do not believe that. The powerful eight-cylinder does not get short of breath and sends over 500 hp to the rear wheels via an automatic transmission.

future

A unique setup in the current automotive landscape. But also a setup that will not stand the test of time. Because every brand has to meet ever stricter CO2 specifications, Chevrolet is also forced to make the Corvette cleaner. Now the brand new E-Ray is the first step towards an emission-free future.

The E-Ray is the fastest Corvette ever made. The 6.2-liter V8, which already squeezes out 500 hp under its own power, is now supported by an electric motor on the front axle. It delivers another 160 hp and gives this Corvette E-Ray a system performance of over 650 hp.

Faster than Z06

It’s not the strongest, but it’s the fastest Vette of all time. The extreme Z06 with 5.5 liter turboless V8 has 670 hp. It manages to tap 97 km/h (60 mph) within 2.6 seconds. The E-Ray is 0.1 seconds faster to the same 60 mph due to its four-wheel drive and electric motor. And thus just as fast as the Bugatti Veyron, which 18 years ago was the fastest production car in the world with the same time. By the way, not when it comes to top speed, because this E-Ray doesn’t come close to the famous 407 km/h.

At the same time, the E-Ray is also the first Corvette that can be driven fully electrically. In what is known as stealth mode, the American can drive electrically at speeds of up to 45 mph (72 km/h). It’s only a few kilometers, because the battery pack only measures 1.9 kWh. So this isn’t a plug-in hybrid like cars like the McLaren Artura and Ferrari 296 GTB are. If you want to charge the battery of your E-Ray as quickly as possible, select the Charge+ driving mode while driving.

goose flesh

There is more news about subcutaneous technology. The E-Ray comes standard with Brembo carbon fiber brakes. It also has a new 12V battery that supports the start-stop system. According to Chevrolet, the V8 and 160-horsepower electric motor also work “in unison” to create a “visceral sonic experience.” We think so, because the 6.2-liter V8 alone gives you goosebumps.

Chevrolet is changing more than just the powertrain with the C8. For example, his carriage is no less than 9 centimeters wider than that of the car we already know. As befits a hybrid, this E-Ray is also crammed with some unique plaques that reveal electrical engineering is on board. It also delivers an exclusive Electric Blue package in which the electric ‘Vette is striped.

luggage compartment

The normal Corvette has a small trunk in the nose in addition to the luggage compartment in the back. This E-Ray still has that front luggage space, despite the addition of a compact electric motor on the front axle. As in the normal C8, the E-Ray has a total of 355 liters of luggage space.

Then the bad news: the addition of that electrical engineering makes the E-Ray a little heavier than its brethren. Where the normal Stingray weighs 1654 kg, this hybrid Corvette tips the scales at 1712 kg. The convertible weighs 1749 kg.

Price Corvette E-Ray

Even worse news is the price, although that’s probably a positive point in the Netherlands. In the United States, this Corvette E-Ray has a starting price of around €96,000, making it the same price as the amazing Z06. The regular Stingray is even available in the same country for 60,000 euros.

In the Netherlands, however, you pay to squint for a normal Corvette Stingray. Due to our BPM system and the enormous CO2 emissions of the C8, among other things, it costs at least around 150,000 euros in our country. Although the CO2 emissions of this E-Ray are not yet known, they will likely be lower. And that probably also has positive consequences for the Dutch price.

To the Netherlands?

Chevrolet will begin selling the E-Ray later this year. It is not yet clear when the model will come to the Netherlands.
