Volkswagen dares anyway: “GTI replaces GTX”

Volkswagen is preparing for a fully electric future. With the introduction of the “sporty” GTX label, it was expected that the iconic GTI label would be sent to the eternal hunting grounds. But it turns out: Volkswagen simply keeps the legendary combination of these three letters alive. The three letters will probably soon replace the brand new GTX label.
That’s what Thomas Schäfer, the head of Volkswagen, says in an interview with AutoExpress. In it he already announced that the name Golf would never disappear from the German model range and that an ID. Golf is coming. It is now becoming apparent that the iconic GTI label will continue to be worn by its brand for many years to come. Even with electric models.
GTX
“We have iconic brand names like Golf and GTI. You would be crazy if you let it die,” said Schäfer in an interview with the British medium. That would mean that the GTI label will eventually appear on all-electric models from the brand as well. Especially since Volkswagen not long ago introduced the GTX label to indicate its sportier electric models.

“We are currently discussing how we can make our electric models sportier and carry the GTI name into the future. GTX was an idea we had on the road to electrification. We’ll see if we still need it in the future. But GTI is so strong,” said Schäfer.
ID.3 and ID. to hum
As already mentioned, Volkswagen now uses the GTX designation for electric models such as the ID.4 and ID.5. Also the soon-to-be-facelifted ID.3 will get similar GTX treatment this year, while an ID. Buzz GTX is coming. However, the term GTX cannot yet expect much enthusiasm, as the models have not yet come close to the famous GTI models from Volkswagen. If the GTI label does indeed return to an electric vehicle, Volkswagen will have to take steps towards truly sporty electric cars.
