There were more road accidents with injuries last year than in previous years. Not only in the Corona years 2020 and 2021 there were fewer victims. 2022 will also surpass 2019 in terms of casualties.
Paul Broer, owner of the National Police transport portfolio, draws this conclusion in De Telegraaf. The numbers don’t lie and are probably even higher than currently stated.
More road accidents with injuries
According to preliminary figures, in 2022 there will be 578 road accidents with at least one fatality (the exact number of road fatalities is not yet known). The number of traffic accidents with at least one injured person is 21,457. In 2019, a total of 21,400 people were injured in traffic accidents.
“Of course there are more traffic accidents this year compared to the Corona years 2020 and 2021, when there were fewer accidents because there was less traffic on the road. But there are also more road deaths compared to 2019. This is a worrying trend,” says Broer. In 2019 there were 661 road fatalities. In 2020 and 2021 it was 610 and 582.
More accidents in the evening hours
The numbers of traffic accidents are not yet complete, but the police can already say something about the negative numbers. For example, there have been more accidents involving electric bicycles in recent years. Older people in particular are involved in this. In addition, in 2022 there were more accidents in the evening than in the morning. Speeding, using the phone while driving and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs are still among the top 5 causes of road accidents.
Broer calls on municipalities and states to deal intensively with road safety. “For example, when it comes to lighting local streets. But also when it comes to cycle paths.”
The exact number of traffic accidents with injuries in 2022 is not yet known
The exact number of road deaths and injuries will be announced by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) in the spring.
