Electric driving is the future, say many car brands. Porsche is also electrifying. But the car manufacturer from Stuttgart is not fully committed to e-cars and is working with synthetic fuels.

In April of this year, Porsche announced that it would invest 75 million euros in a HiF Global LLC. This party is responsible for the construction of a pilot plant for e-fuels in Chile. The first factory has now officially opened.

“The potential of eFuels is enormous. There are currently more than 1.3 billion vehicles with internal combustion engines worldwide. Many of these will remain on the road for decades to come, and eFuels offer owners of existing cars an almost CO2-neutral alternative. As a manufacturer of powerful and efficient engines, Porsche has extensive know-how in the field of fuels,” says Michael Steiner.

The plant in Chile will have to produce around 130,000 liters of fuel in the pilot phase. Citizens cannot fill up with the fuel at first, but it is used in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup and in various Porsche Experience Centers. This is intended to draw attention to synthetic fuel.

550 million liters

After the test phase, around 2025, the factory will run a constant production of 55 million liters per year. About two years later, the plant will produce 550 million liters of synthetic fuel per year.

Synthetic fuel is not a substitute for electric driving

Although synthetic fuel can greatly reduce the CO2 emissions of vehicles with internal combustion engines, it will not replace electric driving. Porsche is working on a CO2-neutral balance across the entire value chain by 2030. This also includes a CO2-neutral use phase for future all-electric models.
