1961 Ferrari 250 returns as an all-new hydrogen car

In 1961 the Ferrari 250 GT SWB won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the contemporary reinterpretation of the iconic model is ready to conquer the heart of every car enthusiast. Get to know the Competizione Ventidue.

Competizione Ventidue

The Ventidue (’22’ in Italian) concept was designed by London-based Forge Design. As a decentralized design agency, the company provides designers, modelers and project managers with automotive companies as a kind of employment agency. And to emphasize their expertise and skill, they have given this Ferrari gem a new coat of paint.

The Ventidue’s origins date back to 1959, when the sports car’s spiritual ancestor, the Ferrari 250 GT SWB, was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show. The launch took place in the middle of two major arts and music events. The release of Miles Davis’ groundbreaking album kind of blue a month earlier and the opening of the architecturally impressive Guggenheim Museum in New York a few weeks later.

Jazz legend Miles Davis loved lightning fast cars and drove around in a Ferrari himself. “We wanted to design a car that Miles Davis would have bought as soon as his album was released,” Forge Design said in a statement.

“We went back to what the car was then, what it represented. The Ventidue is inspired by the art and architecture of the sixties without losing sight of the details of a perfect design.”

Ferrari on hydrogen beats electric car

Despite the retro design of the classic car, the brand new Ferrari is equipped with the latest technological gadgets. The Ventidue is not an electric car but is powered by a modified V12 engine that weighs less than 165 kg and uses indirect hydrogen injection.

In addition, the car features an aluminum and carbon fiber chassis and fully independent suspension for modern performance and handling. A final production of the modern Ferrari classic car is not planned for the time being.

However, interested parties can apply via the Competizione Ventidue website. Mind you, other restorations – without a hydrogen engine – often cost more than 1.5 million euros on top of the 8 million euros hanging on a Ferrari 250 GT SWB today.
