And that’s plug-in station wagon number two: the Opel Astra Electric

Why number two? Because Peugeot presented the e-308 SW two months ago. And with that, the segment of plug-in station wagons is finally getting some body. Because the only affordable battery break is currently the MG 5. The Opel Astra Electric will be added at the beginning of next year.

But let’s not focus too much on the station wagon. Of course, the Opel Astra Electric will also be available as a hatchback. In any case, Opel boss Florian Hüttl is (a bit too) enthusiastic about it, because he describes the brand new Astra Electric as a “real pioneer”.

Opel Astra Electric with improved Stellantis powertrain

We wouldn’t have chosen those words for a car with the same powertrain as DS 3 Crossback E-Tense, Opel Corsa-e, Opel Mokka-e, Peugeot e-208, Peugeot e-2008 and Peugeot e-308.

It’s the well-known Stellantis in a recently upgraded form, with an electric motor delivering 156 hp and 270 Nm and a 54 kWh battery.

Official WLTP range of up to 416 kilometers

It is worth noting that Opel communicates two figures for average energy consumption: 12.7 kWh/100 km and the official WLTP figure 14.9 kWh/100 km. The former will apply in the city, because in everyday use, electric cars usually do not fall below their specified WLTP consumption. They are often right above it.

With good anticipation and compliance with the pace, a range of up to 416 kilometers should still be possible. Those with more kilometers ahead can stop at a fast charger, where the Astra Electric reaches a speed of 100 kW. And that’s not surprising. Ideally, the battery should be 80 percent full again after about half an hour.

The battery under the car floor takes up some luggage space

Since the battery of the Opel Astra Electric is under the floor of the vehicle, some luggage space is lost. The Sports Tourer with a pure combustion engine swallows between 598 and 1635 liters of suitcases, bags and crates. With the plug-in hybrid and also with the Astra Electric, 516 – 1553 liters remain.
