Despite the existence of the ID.3, the next Volkswagen Golf will be electric

Now that Volkswagen has the ID.3, there’s no room for an electric Golf, is there? You would think so, but in Wolfsburg you think differently. The ninth generation Volkswagen Golf simply comes with a battery and plug variant.

The Volkswagen Golf will not go away, CEO Thomas Schäfer told British Autocar. The model simply becomes part of the current ID string. In 2019, Volkswagen presented the eighth generation of the Golf. It should last until 2027 or 2028.

Volkswagen Golf is a cult name

“We have iconic names like Golf and GTI,” says Schäfer, “it would be crazy to let them gather dust. We are sticking to the ID label, but well-known models will continue to have a name.” Schäfer calls up the ID. Buzz on as an example. An electric Volkswagen does not always have to have a number, like ID.3 or ID.5, but can also have an ID. called golf.

Golf will not replace the ID.3

“We’ll never get rid of the name again,” says the Volkswagen boss with determination, “never.” He wants to be clear about the positioning of the next generation. The Golf will not replace the ID.3 because Volkswagen sees them as different models with different positioning and different dimensions.

Probably between ID.2 and ID.3

Is there room for both? “Yes,” thinks Schäfer. “The ID.3 is not a Golf successor. It’s more of a Golf Plus.” The ninth edition of the Golf will probably be placed between the upcoming ID.2 and the ID.3. It’s not because of the MEB platform, but because of the new SSP architecture.
