Not this prototype, but a street version of it. Porsche is working on a new 911 Safari – it is also said to be called Dakar. The model has all-wheel drive and stands higher on the wheels than a normal Porsche 911.

We have seen the 911 Safari camouflaged several times on the Nordschleife. But the unveiling of this 911 with portal axles also hints at the upcoming model.

With the Porsche 911 on the highest volcano

Porsche built two special prototypes with which it scaled the world’s highest volcano, the 6,000 meter high Ojes del Salado in Chile. This is a problem for cars (and people) because the air is so much thinner there.

Based on a 992 Carrera 4S with 450 hp

The 911 that Porsche used for this job is based on the 992 Carrera 4S with a 450 hp biturbo six-cylinder boxer engine.

The standard seven-speed automatic transmission was retained, but with lower gear ratios.

With portal axles, like a Hummer H1

An important change to this 911 are the portal axles. A normal driveshaft is connected to the center of the wheels. To get better ground clearance, a portal axle is higher. The drive goes down via gears, to the wheels.

In addition, the off-road 911 has a roll cage, carbon fiber bucket seats, differential locks, a winch and all sorts of skid plates to protect the vital parts from sharp stones. The wheel suspension was also strengthened.

Porsche won Paris-Dakar twice

It is not the first time that Porsche has left the beaten path. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Porsche took part in the Safari Rally and Paris-Dakar, first with the 911 SC and later with the 953 and 959. The brand won the Dakar in 1984 and 1986.
