Volkswagen Golf or Mercedes? These are the most popular used cars for people over 65

The Volkswagen Golf has long been the most popular used car in the Netherlands. Other German brands are also always very popular. But do people over 65 also choose these models?
The car sales site Gaspedal.nl conducted a survey of the most popular used cars among people aged 65 and over. Please note that the research only shows the search queries and not whether the cars were actually purchased.
The most popular used cars among people over 65
The Volkswagen Golf is also the most popular used car among people over 65. In 2023, the model was searched 163,941 times by age group.

The Ford Focus is in second place with 138,645 searches. This model ranks 5th when we look at all search queries. With 130,175 searches, the Volkswagen Polo is in third place among the most popular used cars among people over 65. What is striking is that there are no cars with a high entry level in the top 3.
No SUV used
If the selection is made based on the body shape, the SUV will even lose out. People over 65 searched 431,510 times for station wagons, 382,964 times for hatchbacks and 359,203 times for SUVs. The most popular options for a used car for a person over 65 are: cruise control, air conditioning and a navigation system.
People over 65 are more likely to have a driving license
People over 65 have a larger share of the used car market than before. According to Statistics Netherlands, almost a quarter of people who have a driving license for a car are 65 years old or older. That’s 45 percent more than 10 years ago.
There has been a significant increase, especially among women. The number of women over 65 with a driving license has increased by 53 percent in 10 years. The number of women aged 75 or older with a driving license has doubled in the last 10 years.
