Why Shell will sell a thousand of its own gas stations

It is noteworthy that the oil company Shell has decided to sell a thousand gas stations worldwide this year and in 2025. Instead, investments are primarily being made in charging options for electric cars.

Shell writes this in the “Energy Transition Strategy” report presented this week. The company has around 25,000 of its own gas stations worldwide. About 4 percent of them are sold.

Instead, Shell wants to install at least 200,000 public charging stations worldwide within the next six years, most of them in China and Europe. There are now around 54,000.

Climate goals watered down

Perhaps somewhat contradictory is the fact that Shell last week weakened its own climate targets, from a CO2 reduction of 20 percent compared to 2016 to 15 to 20 percent.

Shell claims it wants to be carbon neutral by 2050, with CO2 emissions halved by 2030 compared to 2016. The company is investing around 15 billion euros over the next two years.
