Why there is also a major shortage of diesel in the Netherlands

Yesterday we wrote about the US only having diesel for three weeks. In Europe, and therefore also in the Netherlands, we are also confronted with fuel shortages.

Diesel was cheaper than petrol for decades until the situation changed for the first time in history earlier this year. At the present time, the average price in the Netherlands is EUR 2.15 for a liter of petrol and EUR 2.26 for a liter of diesel.

Due to the diesel shortage, prices are rising sharply

Diesel prices are expected to continue to rise. There is a risk of shortage. This is mainly due to new sanctions for the import of Russian oil and diesel.

Europe is also very dependent on Russia in this area, so the sanctions will hit us hard. Like other countries, the Netherlands must now look for alternatives to Russian oil. And that will drive the price up even more.

Diesel shortage also noticeable in the Netherlands

The petrol station interest group (BETA) expects that the shortage of diesel will also make itself felt at the pump. A spokesman said diesel would no longer be available at some gas stations in the coming months.

The mineral oil companies are more positive and do not expect a shortage of diesel in the Netherlands. And should things ever get bad, the government will always have a large stockpile of diesel. In many other European countries, the stock is too low, according to experts, there will be a problem there.

The Dutch government is working on an emergency plan

An emergency plan is now being drawn up in The Hague if it turns out that the strategic inventory is not sufficient. Among other things, this plan defines which parties have priority in the distribution of diesel, such as the police, fire brigade and rescue services.
