10-year maximum rate for the driving license: The passport has become significantly more expensive

A little over 10 years ago, the maximum driving license rate was introduced for the first time. This rate has increased over the last 10 years. How much will you pay to apply for a new driver’s license in 2024?

From January 1, 2014, a maximum driving license rate will apply throughout the Netherlands. This meant that the municipalities could no longer determine the price of the Pink Card themselves. Some municipalities charged around 40 euros and in some places you had to pay 68 euros for the introduction.

Maximum license fee 10 years

10 years ago the maximum rate for a driving license was 38.48 euros. This amount consisted of 9.70 euros in fixed costs for the central government and 28.78 euros in costs for the municipality.

The Pink Card is much more expensive

More than 10 years later, the cost of applying for a driver’s license has risen sharply. In 2024 you will pay a maximum of 51.11 euros for a new Pink Card. This amount consists of 14.35 euros costs for the federal government and 36.76 euros costs for the municipality.

You will pay much more for an urgent request. For an urgent application, the municipality pays an additional 54 euros to the RDW. An urgent application therefore costs 90.76 euros.

Last year the price for an urgent application was 78.75 euros. For a normal application you had to pay 44.65 euros. This year the price has risen sharply.

Validity of driving license

If you applied for a driving license shortly after the maximum tax was introduced, you must now apply for a new one. Driving licenses are valid for 10 years from the day you apply to the municipality. In some cases the pass is valid for a shorter period of time. Are you between 65 and 70 years old? Then your driving license is valid until your 75th birthday. From the age of 70, your Pink Card is valid for a maximum of 5 years. Read more about the validity and stricter requirements here.
