When will the entire Dutch fleet be electric? This will take some time because the number of electric cars will only grow slowly in the coming years.
This is the conclusion reached by the knowledge center ElaadNL. Until 2030, growth in the number of electric vehicles will remain very limited, mainly due to the government increasingly reducing its incentive measures.
Strong electric growth after 2030
After 2030, ElaadNL expects strong growth, with the main drivers being the introduction of more affordable models, increasingly lower battery prices and the fact that European regulations ban petrol cars.
The forecast assumes that there will be around 10 million electric vehicles on the road in the Netherlands by 2044. For comparison: at the time of writing, there are more than 9.2 million cars registered in our country.
Overloading of the power grid
However, there is a big problem. We currently have more than 500,000 charging stations in the Netherlands, but by 2044 there are expected to be around 4.3 million. This places high demands on our already overloaded power grid.
We need to move to a system of grid-centric charging, as ElaadNL calls it, where electric car charging occurs mainly during off-peak hours to spread the load across the grid.
