BYD follows Tesla and finds land for a European factory

It was big news when Elon Musk opened Tesla’s first production site in Europe: the Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg. Competitor BYD also wants to move to Europe, but has decided on a different country.

BYD signed an agreement with the Hungarian government last Tuesday. The Chinese brand will build a large factory in the country.

First European factory BYD

BYD’s first factory opens in Szeged, not to be confused with the island of Sziget near Budapest. The city is the third largest in the country, close to the Serbian and Romanian borders and 1,000 kilometers from the Tesla factory.

Exactly how big the factory will be is still unclear. It will undoubtedly be a large production facility. According to BYD, the factory will create thousands of jobs.

It is also still unclear which models will come from Hungary. Logically, this applies to the cars that are also available in Europe: Seal, Seal U, Atto 3, Dolphin, Han, Tang and ETP3 (the company van).

Not the only production location

The production facility in Hungary is not the only factory BYD will build. For example, production has just started in Uzbekistan and construction is also underway in Brazil. Local production of cars can offer many advantages (in the future). Finally, there is increasing talk of trade barriers for Chinese cars.
