NSC wants smoking ban in cars with children riding in them

NSC wants a smoking ban, among other things, in playgrounds and amusement parks, but also in cars when children are in them.

MP Daniëlle Jansen announced a motion to regulate this during the Ministry of Health, Social Affairs and Sport’s budget discussion. A section of the House of Representatives, including the PVV and BBB, believes this goes too far. The three parties are holding talks with the VVD about forming a new cabinet.

PVV MP Fleur Agema said that with this smoking ban proposal, NSC was coming “behind people’s front doors,” which she considered undesirable. When asked by Agema whether NSC did not think the violation went too far, Jansen replied negatively.

“Children should always be protected from secondhand smoke,” Jansen said. The requirement to wear a seat belt is also a measure “behind the car door”.

BBB party leader Caroline van der Plas considers the step from the car door to the front door to be a small one. Van der Plas fears the next step will be a ban on smoking at home when children are present.

NSC believes this fear is unfounded. “That’s still miles too far,” said Jansen. “I would initially stick to a ban on smoking in cars.” In order to deter young people in particular from smoking, the CDA is more interested in further increasing the consumption tax. NSC wants to think about it.
