With a new battery, your electric car will be fully charged in 10 minutes

Harvard researchers have a new one solid stateBattery developed. The battery not only allows you to charge your electric car very quickly, but also ensures a long service life.

Solid stateBatteries use a solid electrolyte instead of a liquid one like traditional lithium-ion batteries. These new solid-state batteries charge faster and have a higher energy density.

Electric car with a range of 1,200 kilometers possible

For this reason, several car manufacturers are experimenting with the new technology. For example, Volkswagen recently achieved promising results and Toyota is considering introducing electric cars within a few years solid stateBatteries. These should enable a range of 1,200 kilometers and a minimum charging time.

Researchers also on Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences from the renowned Harvard University are now coming with hopeful news. They used an anode made of lithium. This would probably work better than the commonly used graphite anodes if so-called dendrites did not often form on them.

Breakthrough for solid-state batteries

These are growths that form during charging and on the anode and corrode them, slowing down the charging process. Dendrites can break the separation between the anode and cathode and cause a short circuit or even a fire.

Harvard scientists have now found a solution for this. They have added tiny silicone particles that prevent dendrites from forming. This allows this battery to charge much faster. The researchers speak of a charging time of 10 minutes. Suddenly charging your electric car is no longer a problem.

Low degradation battery

Additionally, the battery doesn’t seem to be getting much worse. The scientists built a prototype of the postage stamp-sized battery, which they charged and discharged 6,000 times. At the end of this battery ordeal, the battery still had 80 percent of its original capacity. This is more than other battery types on the market.

“Batteries with lithium metal anodes are considered the holy grail of batteries because they have a capacity ten times higher than graphite anodes and can therefore extend the range of electric cars,” says Professor Xin Li, who leads the project. The researchers have now patented the concept.
