Severe frost, but no frozen car windows: why don’t we have to scratch?

Last night the temperatures dropped to -7 degrees or even lower in many places. And yet the car windows were not frozen in many places this morning.

This is mainly due to the low humidity, which causes further problems.

Do not scratch

Some winter mornings we have to clean the windshield of our car, other mornings, like today, we don’t. “It all has to do with the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere and the temperature. The humid outside air causes condensation to form on your car, which freezes in sub-zero temperatures. It was quite frozen last night, but the humidity is currently low. And if there is little water vapor or moisture, there is nothing to freeze,” explains weatherman Frank Deboosere simply.

Even today, in most places it is not necessary to cover the windshield with cardboard or antifreeze. From Friday the air will become more humid, but even the worst of the cold will be over.

A big advantage is that you don’t have to remove ice from the car windows in the morning. But the low humidity also has disadvantages. Especially for those who are particularly sensitive to it.
