This BMW can sail and fly

We obviously know BMW from its cars and motorcycles, but did you know that the brand also makes a boat? And it can even fly.

The boat uses Foil technique. Dit means the whole thing can float above the water. This makes the sailing experience much quieter, more comfortable and looks special.

BMW entered into a partnership with Tyde for the boat. This company has been building luxury yachts for some time, including those with so-called hydrofoils (Foil technique).

On a BMW boat, raising the hull out of the water not only has advantages for a comfortable ride. Since there is much less resistance above the water, the electric motors do not have to work as hard. The German car manufacturer claims that the boat’s energy requirements are up to 80 percent lower than a conventional hull.

Saving energy makes sense because the boat is fully electric. There are six batteries from the BMW i3 under the deck, each with just over 40 kWh. The battery packs are connected to two electric motors that produce up to 240 kW (327 hp). The maximum speed is 30 knots (55 kilometers per hour).

The range of the flying BMW is around 50 nautical miles (around 100 kilometers). So you won’t get far with a fully electric boat.

The interior

In addition to special technology, the BMW also has a special interior. It looks like a small lounge with big windows. The boat’s infotainment screen has roughly the same layout as a new BMW.

It’s unclear exactly how much BMW’s boat costs. According to reports, the 13.15 meter long colossus will cost around $2 million.
