The powertrain of electric cars is much simpler than that of gasoline cars. However, this does not immediately mean that every electric vehicle is reliable. For example, a reliability report from the German TÜV shows that this Tesla is not reliable.
There are numerous reliability studies with many different results. You have to take one study with caution and draw a clear conclusion from the other study.
The least reliable car
In Germany, cars have to go through a TÜV test. The inspection is comparable to what we know in the Netherlands as MOT. Based on the figures from the German inspection, the TÜV compiles a list of the least reliable cars. These are the models that are most often rejected. A Tesla model does not perform well.

Although the numbers obviously say something about the condition of the cars after a few years, it may also be that certain cars are driven significantly more kilometers or receive less (good) maintenance on average. Whatever the cause, the Tesla Model 3 most often fails the TÜV test of the young models.
The electric vehicle has a defect rate of 14.7 percent. This means that the Tesla Model 3 performs significantly worse than the Dacia Logan and the Seat Alhambra, which already don’t perform that well. The Model 3 mainly has problems with the brakes and suspension.
According to this TÜV study, all three models are considered the most unreliable cars between the ages of two and three.
It’s not just the Tesla Model 3 that performs poorly
It’s not just the Tesla Model 3 that performs poorly. The Dacia Dokker and the BMW X5/X6 also did not perform well in the test. Below is a list of the two least reliable cars in their age group.
Age of the car | Fashion model | Error rate |
---|---|---|
2-3 years | Tesla Model 3 | 14.7 |
Dacia Logan | 11.4 | |
4-5 years | BMW X5/X6 | 17.9 |
VW Sharan | 17.7 | |
6-7 years | Dacia Dokker | 25.9 |
BMW 5/6 series | 24.8 | |
8-9 years | Dacia Dokker | 32.2 |
Fiat Punto | 29.7 | |
10-11 years | Renault Twingo | 36.2 |
Dacia Logan | 35.5 | |
12-13 years | Dacia Logan | 40.9 |
Renault Twingo | 39.9 |
