There will soon be an American muscle car under your Christmas tree

In the dark days before Christmas, an American vehicle dominates Dutch television: a Mack truck surrounded by lights. Across the ocean, that’s a muscle car.

The American brand Dodge introduced the new Charger at the end of August 2022, with – you won’t believe it – a fully electric powertrain.

Dodge Charger Coupe again

Since 2006, the Charger has been a four-door sedan. But not in the near future. Just like General Lee, the orange Charger from the TV series The Dukes of Hazzard, it will be a two-door coupe.

The production model will look exactly like the concept car, as shown in this Christmas greeting from Dodge. Below that it says “pre-production model” in small letters.

Electric muscle car

What do we know about the charger? That it is electric, has an 800-volt system on board for super-fast charging and will be faster than the current generation Charger Hellcat. It has a 6.2 liter supercharged V8 engine with 717 hp and sprints to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds.

Strictly speaking, the Dodge Charger Daytona SRT, as the newcomer is officially called, is not the successor to the Charger, but to the Challenger. Construction of the latter stopped this year.

Also with petrol engines

Various American media reports that the new Charger will also come onto the market with gasoline engines. This time no V8, but an in-line six-cylinder with a basic output of 400 hp. A version with 500 hp is apparently also planned.
