With the Polestar 5 you spend extremely short time at the charging station

At least with the prototype of the Polestar 5, in which the manufacturer is testing new, super-fast charging batteries. It is not known whether these will immediately be incorporated into the production model in 2025.

Polestar is working on batteries that can charge more than 100 miles of range in five minutes without degrading more quickly. Fast charging too often is not good for normal batteries.

The Polestar 5 will be a sporty fastback in the class of BMW i5, Mercedes EQE, Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S. It was introduced three years ago as a precept concept and is scheduled to come onto the market in 2025.

At Polestar Day this week, the 5 stood out in production form from the rest of the Chinese-Swedish brand’s delivery lineup. It looks like a larger version of the 4.

Why does the Polestar 5 have no rear window?

This means that, like the 4, it has no rear window. The driver can therefore only look backwards via a camera mirror. We’ll see if that’s a good thing in our first tests.

Polestar claims that the lack of a rear window is not a gimmick, but more or less necessary. “We wanted to give the 4 a sporty silhouette with a low roof and sloping windshield,” a Polestar engineer told us at the Shanghai Auto Show.

“We were faced with a dilemma: the roofline could not be raised, but headroom in the rear had to be guaranteed. Therefore, we could not place part of the roll cage – the crash structure – in its normal place, otherwise it would limit the space in the rear.

“The reinforcement is now deeper and further back, turning the rear window into a mailbox. So we thought: Why not just remove the window completely?”

Almost 900 hp and 900 Nm

According to the brand, the Polestar 5 will have enormous range, but what that will be remains a secret. We know that the 5 Series has all-wheel drive, an output of almost 900 hp and 900 Nm of torque.
