The government has now also recognized that the funding for electric cars is too low

Until now, you only had a few days at most to apply for a subsidy to buy an electric car, otherwise the pot would be empty. Enthusiasm for the funding program for electric cars for private individuals (SEPP) is now low and the government now sees it that way too.

We are once again taking up our hobbyhorse: professional drivers have been able to benefit almost unlimitedly from tax advantages for plug-in hybrids and electric cars for years. It is somewhat unfair that the budget for private individuals is limited.

Subsidy for electric cars

A few years ago you could get a subsidy of 4,000 euros for a new electric car and 2,000 euros for a used one. The pot from which the 4,000 euros came was empty after a few days every January. How different it is now.

Amount not reduced in 2024

The funding level for new electric vehicles has been gradually reduced to 2,950 euros, which has an impact on the popularity of the SEPP model. The government’s plan to reduce the amount to 2,550 euros by 2024 has now been abandoned.

Falling demand for electric vehicles

Parliamentary documents from State Secretary for Infrastructure Heijnen show that it was decided to keep the subsidy the same in 2024. So at 2950 euros. The reason for this is the declining demand for electric vehicles and the disappointing number of funding applications this year.

Second hand grant popular

At the beginning of October, the funding pot for new cars was still more than half full. The pot for used electric vehicles only contains 20 percent of the total. As before, private individuals can receive 2,000 euros when they buy a used electric car.

This year, 99.4 million euros are available for the SEPP program, of which 32.4 million are for the promotion of used electric cars. At the beginning of this month, only €6 million remained for the latter category. The pot for new cars (67 million euros) still contained 33 million euros.
