Will the ET5 Touring be Nio’s breakthrough in the Netherlands?

Things haven’t really gone well with Nio in the Netherlands so far, but this ET5 Touring has the potential to change that.

After around a year of presence and soon five models in the range, we can no longer call Nio a newcomer. However, with fewer than 200 registered cars, the registration figures are still far from those of the established order.

No breakthrough in the Netherlands yet

This will be partly due to the models that Nio debuted with in the Netherlands, as they were mostly very large and very expensive cars. In any case, it is noticeable that Nio is pursuing high price goals because it believes that it can keep up with well-known premium brands.

Compared to BMW, Tesla or Mercedes-Benz, for example, this Nio ET5 Touring has a trump card because it is the first electric station wagon in its class.

The Nio ET5

With a length of 4.79 meters and a wheelbase of 2.89 meters, the ET5 Touring is in size between a Tesla Model 3 and S. The width of almost two meters is exorbitantly large and of course this is also due to the replaceable battery pack, which should also fit in significantly larger models. You can choose from a 75 or 100 kWh battery, which results in a WLTP range of 435 or 560 kilometers. In addition, the network of exchange offices is slowly but surely expanding. There are now almost places in the Netherlands, Germany and Scandinavia where an empty battery can be exchanged for a full one.

A tour

Our biggest problem with the ET5 so far has been its practical comfort. For an additional charge of 1,200 euros, this Touring partially solves this problem. The luggage compartment has a capacity of 490 liters, and there is an additional compartment of 42 liters under the double loading floor. A seat backrest that can be folded into three parts is standard and with all three parts folded down the load space is up to 1300 liters.

Nio ET5 Touring, breakthrough

Legroom is still sufficient for the average Dutch adult, however you will notice that the back seat is quite short and is positioned low in the car, so thigh support is not optimal. Headroom under the extended glass roof has been increased by 17 millimeters.

A successful design

In our opinion, the ET5 Touring looks very successful from the outside, with a real premium look. The interior is comparable to that of its brand colleagues. Calm design, neat workmanship and a solid mix of materials. The infotainment screen has since been updated and has some new features and a slightly different design. It remains top-notch in terms of calculation speed and functionality, but the menu structure is so extensive that it takes a while to get to know it inside and out.

The prices of the Nio ET5 Touring

Prices range from 51,900 euros for a 75 kWh version, to which a monthly fee for battery rental is added, to over 80,000 euros for a version with a 100 kWh battery and some options. But of course Nio prefers purchasing via its own subscription model. Depending on the term and conditions, this costs between 900 and 1200 euros per month. Would we try it? Check it out in the video.

Nio

ET5 Touring

8.5
score

Positive

  • Look
  • Fast
  • All-round chassis
  • Extensive and fast infotainment facilities

Negatives

  • Not cheap
  • Low back seat
  • Small rear window

The Nio ET5 Touring offers that extra bit of practical comfort that the regular ET5 lacks at a reasonable additional cost. It is currently the only electric station wagon in its class and, thanks to its beautiful looks and respectable performance, it is the best Nio we have driven to date.
