Driving is expensive: But the Dutch don’t carpool!

Vehicle tax, insurance, gasoline, repairs and depreciation make driving expensive. Especially in the Netherlands, owning and driving a car is not cheap. That’s why Autovisie gives you lots of tips to save money, but what does the Netherlands actually do with these tips? We will definitely not carpool!

Autoverzekering.nl has examined the influence of inflation and expensive gasoline on the behavior of the Dutch. There were a total of 1004 respondents per issue.

Do not carpool

The study shows that a large proportion of Dutch people are driving less because petrol is expensive and inflation is high (43 percent). Carpooling is not an option for many Dutch people. 9.9 percent agree with the statement: “I have started carpooling more often.” The rest of those surveyed (90.1%) will not carpool despite rising costs.

Since driving is expensive, a large proportion of Dutch people look for the cheapest gas station (76.1 percent). A significantly smaller proportion actually drive slower to save gas (29.2 percent).

Gasoline, expensive, most expensive countries, refueling

It is noticeable that inflation and expensive gasoline have a significant impact on how many Dutch people ride bicycles. 48 percent agree with the statement: “I have started cycling more.”

Dutch people cycle more often because driving is expensive

A small proportion of Dutch people say they have sold their car (5.6 percent). A larger proportion have traded in their car for a more economical one (12.5 percent). Some Dutch people (13.3 percent) say they have postponed servicing their car because of high gasoline prices and inflation. Of course we advise against this.

Timely maintenance can prevent high costs and a well-maintained car is often more economical than one that has been poorly maintained or not maintained at all. Then take your bike with you more often, try to control your right foot or carpool!
