This is the Volkswagen GTI of the future
Volkswagen is showing a new concept model that shows the way the brand wants to go with the GTI label. The EV is basically an ID.2, all with sporty elements that refer to the history of the sports label.
For example, the Hot Hatch is shown in Mars Red, the introductory color of the first generation GTI. This ID.2 even has different driving modes in which the screens and driving characteristics are adapted to those of the Golf 1 GTI, for example.

In the sportiest and most modern driving mode, the “I” in the sports label has been replaced by a flash. The GTI will remain the model designation. As a result, the usual GTI label will reportedly remain and be seen on sporty front-wheel drive electric vehicles from Volkswagen.
The GTX label would be reserved for all-wheel drive models. Volkswagen has not yet made a final decision about the sporty labels.
