Things are not going well for McLaren. The new Artura was supposed to be launched almost two years ago, but that was postponed due to quality issues. The leak is apparently still not over, because McLaren is postponing the successor to the 570S by a few months.
McLaren already showed the Artura at the end of 2020. The model was supposed to go into production a year later, but that was repeatedly postponed. Not only were there problems with the supply of parts, but also ongoing software problems. To make matters worse, a press car also caught fire.
McLaren postpones Artura again
The first Arturas were supposed to be delivered to customers last May, but McLaren has now added four months, according to a message to frustrated American dealers who are struggling with customer cancellations.
Plug-in hybrid on a new platform
The Artura is the first McLaren on a new platform. It is a plug-in hybrid and is powered by a combination of a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 and an electric motor. The total power is 680 hp.
With its 7.4 kWh battery, the 1395 kg Artura can drive up to 30 kilometers electrically. At full power, it accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and has a top speed of 328 km/h.
Topman focuses on quality
Late last year, McLaren’s brand-new CEO, Michael Leiters, made no bones about it. “I heard from my team that in the past we have also accepted products that were not mature. And we just delivered them to the customers.”
“The Artura is the first model where we didn’t do that,” said Leiters. “We saw that the car was not mature, so we stopped delivery.”
According to Leiters, McLaren has jeopardized its financial position by providing inferior cars to its customers. “We want to send an important message to our dealers and customers: that we understand that our focus must remain on quality in the future.”
