Chinese brands are still copying! Just look at this BAIC…

Hey, we don’t say that very well. This is not BAIC, but a model of a new sub-brand that has given BAIC the name Stone. This is the unimaginative name “Stone 01” that sounds awfully familiar to us.

Chinese brands are still stealing from Western and Japanese manufacturers, as we saw at the Shanghai Motor Show in April. We encountered shameless examples that reminded us of the Range Rover Evoque vs. Landwind X7 controversy.

Chinese designers were ‘inspired’

It is also clear where the designers got their “inspiration” from this Stone 01. The appearance of the large Chinese SUV is clearly a combination of Land Rover Defender and Range Rover elements.

Two variants à la Defender 110 and 130

Carnewschina.com found these photos from a Chinese government database. Apparently there are two versions of the Stone 01. One of 5 meters length, which corresponds to the Defender 110, and one of 5.3 meters length, which makes it the Defender 130.

Obviously a Land Rover clone

You could say the Stone 01 has a nose all its own, but other than that it’s clearly a Land Rover clone. The proportions are almost the same and even some design details have been carried over, such as the prominent grille behind the front wheels and the black window pillars.

Not a V8, but a 1.5 liter turbo engine

Where the Stone is completely different from a Land Rover is the powertrain. In the front of the 01 there is no six-cylinder or V8, but a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, which acts as a power generator for the front and rear electric motors, which produce 204 hp and 272 hp respectively.
