“Rising fuel prices leads to more expensive food”

Next month, excise duty on diesel, petrol and LPG will be increased again. That means we’ll all want to stop by the gas station just before July 1st to stock up on as much fuel as possible. This can create enormous pressure at the pump. In addition, according to BETA chairman Ewout Klok, the price increase may make groceries (even) more expensive.

From July 1, petrol will be 13.8 cents more expensive than the day before. With a tank filling of 50 liters there is a surcharge of 6.90 euros.

pressure on the pump

In order to avoid crowds at the petrol stations, it is advisable not to refuel on the last two days of this month, but rather a little earlier. Belangenvereniging Tankstations (BETA) is less concerned about the pressure at the pump than about the rise in fuel prices.

Fuel, petrol, more expensive, diesel, groceries

Klok, who also owns a gas station, says: “Entrepreneurs have a hard time, especially in the border area. Now we were lucky that we were on about the same price level as Belgium and Germany. But now we are pricing our way out of the market again. It is idiotic that the excise duty on fuel varies so much from country to country.”

Rising fuel prices will lead to more expensive groceries

Klok believes that the more expensive fuel will even lead to price increases in supermarkets. “The transport of bread and cheese also costs more. “We are a transport country,” explains the chairman.

Although the prices of fuels such as gasoline will increase next month, the reversal of the consumption tax cut may not happen in 2024. You can read how this works in this article.
