You want this occasion: Volvo 780 Turbo, a wonderful youngtimer!

Autovisie is always on the lookout for used cars for enthusiasts and therefore searches the listings on the Gaspedal.nl sales site. This time we found a special Swede, the Volvo 780 Turbo.

The Volvo 780 was first presented to the public at the 1985 Geneva Motor Show. With a design by Bertone and technology by Volvo – if you have opted for the four-cylinder – it is a wonderful youngtimer.

In the early years, the Volvo 780 was delivered with a rigid rear axle. From 1987 the model received a multi-link suspension. And that, for example, is much more convenient.

Anyone who opted for a diesel engine got the 2.4-liter straight-six from Volkswagen. The 2.8-liter V6 petrol engine was the result of a collaboration between Volvo and PSA. Three four-cylinder engines with a displacement of 2.0 liters or 2.3 liters are Volvo’s so-called “red blocks”. A series of engines known for their reliability. Not only with little power, even if – as in the case of the Volvo 780 – a turbo was installed.

There is even a Volvo 780 model with the B204GT engine that produces 200 hp. However, it is difficult to find these specimens. Only 165 were reportedly built.

Found the opportunity

We find a Volvo 780 Turbo with 160 hp. The vehicle dates from 1988 and therefore has independent wheel suspension, Nivomet shock absorbers and improved air conditioning. Although a manual transmission was also available, in this case a four-speed automatic transmission sent power to the differential between the rear wheels.

Even if the technology is considered “reliable” and the Volvo 780 used car only has 140,002 kilometers of experience, you should always be careful when buying a (so older) car. In addition, the car, imported in 1996, has not passed an MOT since 2014. This can mean that it has been in a barn for years and is still in perfect condition, but it can also mean that it has some standing defects. Think stuck brakes, no-round tires, and battery issues.

The Volvo 780 is for sale for just under 20 grand and still looks great in the pictures. The car is for sale at a Volvo dealership and will no doubt find a lover.
