The US has a gun problem. Time and time again there are massacres – also in schools. Last May, an 18-year-old shot and killed 19 children and two teachers at an elementary school in the small Texas town of Uvalde.
After the massacre in Uvalde, the Democrats of US President Joe Biden (80) and the opposition Republicans in Congress could only agree on a minimal tightening of gun laws. That’s why a school district in the state of Texas has come up with something to at least prepare the students for a murder spree. You launched a book featuring the popular bear character Winnie the Pooh. The title reads: “Stay Safe: Run, Hide, Fight”.
Cindy Campos was stunned when she discovered the book in her six-year-old son’s school bag. Because in the story, the bear and his friends Piglet, the donkey Eeyore and the kangaroo mother Kanga explain with her son Kleine Ruh what students should do in case of a school shooting. “I had no idea what it was about and read it to my son. It was like a punch in the stomach when I got it,” she told Fox4.
Pooh the bear hides in his honey barrel and explains, “We should all hide where no one can find us without making a sound.” He advises turning off the phone. And it goes on to say, “When danger befalls us, don’t stop. Run away!” As a third option, Kanga, Little Ruh and Piglet wear boxing gloves and have the following advice for the children: “If we can’t escape, then we must fight back with all our might.”
The Dallas Independent School District has been criticized on all sides for this. The gun enthusiasts among the parents scolded that the children were being unnecessarily frightened and that the money should be invested in securing the schools and armed guards. Anti-gun parents complained that school shootings were normalized by the book.
Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, was also critical of the book on Twitter. “Winnie the Pooh is now teaching Texas kids about active shooting because the elected officials don’t have the courage to protect our kids and enact proper gun safety laws.”
The school board subsequently apologized and responded to the criticism. “Unfortunately, we have not provided any guidance or context for parents. We apologize for the confusion and are grateful to the parents who reached out to help us become better partners.”
The children’s character Winnie the Pooh and his friends can now be used for free. US copyright law states that authors’ works may be used by anyone until 70 years after the author’s death – or 95 years after publication. The character was created by the British Alan Alexander Milne (1882-1920) to tell his son stories about the clumsy bear. (jmh)
