The jury has decided: Donald Trump (76) is guilty of sexual abuse and defamation. That is the verdict of the nine jurors in the rape trial.
The jury awarded Trump $5 million in damages on Tuesday. The rape charge was dismissed. Since this is a civil process, Trump need not fear imprisonment.
American author Jean Carroll (79) accused the former US president of rape in a civil trial. “Trump raped me,” she said in New York two weeks ago about Trump’s alleged act in a New York luxury department store in the mid-1990s. According to media reports, she told the jury how Trump first approached her asking for help with a gift for a friend.
He then motioned for her to go to a dressing room with him. According to Carroll, he pressed against her there and penetrated the writer first with his fingers and then with his penis.
Carroll went on to say that she eventually pushed Trump away and fled the department store. “I was embarrassed — I thought it was my fault,” Carroll said, according to the New York Times. After the incident, she was unable to enter into romantic relationships.
Minutes after the verdict was announced, Donald Trump told Fox News, “I have absolutely no idea who this woman is.” “The verdict is a disgrace. It is the continuation of the greatest political witch hunt in history.” He is appealing the verdict.
The lawyer for former President Donald Trump immediately announced that he would appeal the verdict. His client is “ready to move on. He will challenge it with an appeal,” attorney Joseph Tacopina said of his client outside the courthouse on Tuesday. Tacopina said he welcomed the dismissal of the civil rape case. However, the verdict was inconsistent – the court was also biased.
The author’s lawyer was pleased with the outcome of the proceedings. “We are very pleased,” said Roberta Kaplan, 57, on Tuesday as she left the courthouse in New York alongside her client. Caroll herself did not testify outside the courthouse.
Trump’s lawyer denied the allegations during the negotiations. The allegations are “unimaginable” and “incredible”. Trump was already prominent as a real estate entrepreneur at the time, so such an act would not have gone unnoticed.
Carroll demanded compensation from Trump for assault and libel. The 79-year-old had testified that she was unable to have romantic relationships after the incident. The criminal charges are time-barred, but under civil law, Carroll was free to sue. Trump, who is seeking to run for president again in 2024 and is running for the Republican nomination, has not personally traveled to the trial.
There is a lower threshold for a guilty verdict in civil trials than in criminal trials: in civil law, such a threshold means that the jurors consider an act probable rather than improbable. In criminal proceedings, on the other hand, guilt must be proven beyond reasonable doubt. (bab/SDA)
