Almost three weeks ago, on the day after the quarter-final coup in Nice, Heiko Vogel emphatically denied all speculation that he could remain head coach in the long term. And at the same time announced the imminent end of the search for a coach.

Blick announced shortly afterwards that Timo Schultz is a serious candidate. And now it came out at the beginning of this week: the St-Pauli legend, a long-time player at the Millerntor and also a coach until his resignation last December, is releasing his contract in Hamburg with immediate effect. This is in line with Vogel’s recent statements that it is due to matters beyond FCB’s influence that the new coach has not yet been presented. But he is optimistic that it will soon be so far.

Contractually, the way for 45-year-old Schultz to Basel is now clear. And since the termination of the contract at St. Pauli became known, the German media have also named FC Basel as Schultz’s likely new employer, and the newspaper Hamburger Abendblatt calls the negotiations “advanced”.

Vogel himself recently commented on Timo Schultz, calling him an “interesting coach” when asked by Blick.
