The US Supreme Court upholds access to the abortion pill

The US Supreme Court has decided to keep access to mifepristone, a drug used in abortion, for the time being.

In the bitter dispute over abortion rights in the United States, the country’s Supreme Court has provisionally upheld access to a drug for abortion. In its judgment of Friday evening (local time), the Supreme Court rejected restrictions on access to the abortion pill mifepristone as long as the legal battle continues.

Nearly two weeks ago, a federal judge in the state of Texas revoked the FDA’s approval for mifepristone, which had been granted in 2000. A federal appeals court in the state of Louisiana overturned this decision, but at the same time tightened the conditions under which the pill can be prescribed. It could only be used until the seventh week and not until the tenth week of pregnancy, and mifepristone could no longer be sent by post.

The US government went to the Supreme Court to challenge these rulings and continue to allow free access to mifepristone. Mifepristone, known in Germany by the trade name Mifegyne, is used in more than every second abortion in the US.

Abortion opponents want to ban mifepristone nationwide

After several new appointments during the tenure of former President Donald Trump (76), the conservative camp has a clear majority of six of the nine justices on the Supreme Court. Proponents of the right to abortion had therefore viewed the court’s ruling with concern.

The ultra-conservative Texas federal judge’s ruling had thrown the United States into a new legal battle over abortion rights — 10 months after the Supreme Court caused a political earthquake by repealing the nation’s fundamental right to abortion. Last June, constitutional judges overturned a landmark 1973 ruling that legalized abortion nationwide.

As a result, numerous states have restricted access to abortions or banned abortions. But that’s not enough for abortion opponents. They want the abortion pill mifepristone to be taken off the market nationwide, including in those states where abortion is still legal. (AFP/SDA)
