According to media reports, Turkey had canceled a previously scheduled meeting in February. Shortly before, however, Ankara had sharply criticized an action by right-wing extremists in Sweden in which a Quran was burned.
Finland and Sweden had applied for membership in the Western Defense Alliance last May under the impression of Russia’s offensive war in Ukraine. All 30 NATO countries must ratify accession. Turkey has long blocked the process. She accuses Sweden, among other things, of not acting consistently enough against people and organizations identified as terrorists by Ankara. Besides Turkey, Hungary is the last NATO country that has not yet ratified the accession of the two states. After a long wait, Parliament will now discuss it shortly and approval is expected.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson recently said he expects his government to make a decision on new terror legislation on March 9. This is a very important step in completing the Trilateral Memorandum between Sweden, Finland and Turkey. The three countries reached the agreement last June.
