Injured Alcaraz shows fantastic return

Cameron Norrie (left) and not Carlos Alcaraz (right) receives the winner’s trophy at the clay court tournament in Rio.

Alcaraz, who had celebrated a perfect comeback after a long injury break with his final victory against Norrie a week earlier in Buenos Aires, was unable to defend his title in Rio. He now has an annual record of eight wins and one loss.

In a tense match, the Spanish starlet first showed signs of nervousness and then fatigue as his right thigh appeared to be in pain. After the final defeat, Alcaraz confirmed that the problems stem from the same muscle in his right leg that cost him his start at the Australian Open. Despite all the pain, he showed his class in the third set with four flawless winners in the same second leg (video below).

At the age of 19, Alcaraz became the youngest world No. 1 after winning the US Open last year. However, he then had to take a break for several months to recover from an injury to his right leg, which caused him to miss the Australian Open, among other things. Novak Djokovic, who won in Melbourne, replaced him at the top of the world rankings a month ago.

The 27-year-old southpaw Norrie, currently number 13 in the rankings, won his fifth tournament on the ATP Tour on the sand track in Rio. (SDA/cmu)
