British director Hugh Hudson, who won four Oscars for “The Hour of the Winner” in 1981, has died. The 86-year-old died Friday “after a short illness” in London, his family reported Friday evening.
Hudson’s movie “The Hour of the Victor” is mainly remembered for the soundtrack of the band Vangelis.
The film won the Best Picture Oscars in 1981. According to the British Film Institute, it was “one of the most controversial British films” of the 1980s, as it was seen as an indictment of the “establishment’s conceit”.
The Victor’s Hour tells the story of two British athletes competing in the 1924 Olympics. One of the two is Jewish athlete Harold Abrahams, who struggles with massive anti-Semitism. He was “beyond devastated” by the death of his “good friend” Hugh Hudson, said actor Nigel Havers, who had appeared in “The Hour of the Victor.”
In addition to his success with the cult film, director Hudson mainly made a career as a director of commercials and documentaries. He was the father of a son and was married since 2003 to actress Maryam d’Abo, who became known as the Bond girl. (sda/afp)
