During a visit by his Brazilian colleague Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, US President Joe Biden urged the preservation of democratic values. “The strong democracy of our two nations has been tested,” Biden said at the White House in Washington on Friday. “We must continue to stand up for democracy, for the democratic values that are at the heart of our strength.” Referring to his right-wing predecessor Jair Bolsonaro, Lula replied: “Brazil has been isolated for four years.”
Left-wing politician Lula triumphed against Bolsonaro in a runoff at the end of October. Lula took office on 1 January. The change of power was accompanied by serious riots. Bolsonaro supporters stormed Congress, the Supreme Court and the seat of government in the capital Brasília in January. The outbreak of violence in Brazil is a stark reminder of the storming of the US Capitol a little over two years ago, when supporters of then-President Donald Trump broke into the House of Representatives in Washington.
Lula openly criticized Bolsonaro during the meeting with Biden. His predecessor did not pay much attention to international relations. “His world started and ended with fake news, morning, noon and night,” said Lula. “Sounds familiar to me,” Biden replied — a clear reference to his predecessor Trump.
