The city council of the capital Lisbon issued an alarm on Tuesday because of the flooding and appealed to the population not to go outside if possible. About 15 people had to be rescued from their homes and a supermarket near the Tagus River was also evacuated.
Traffic chaos in Lisbon
The national commander of civil protection, André Fernandes, spoke of a “complicated” situation. Most access roads to Lisbon are impassable or traffic is heavily hindered.
“There are flooded tunnels that we had to close and that is causing a chaotic situation,” Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas told CNN Portugal. Tuesday night’s rainfall was about as heavy as last week’s Thursday before severe flooding. A woman in her 50s was killed, she drowned in a flooded basement.
