At 5.151 million, just slightly below the record compared to the last quarter of 2021, when Switzerland employed 5.177 million people.
The service sector in particular was strong: 3.977 million people were employed in the third quarter of 2022. This is also the second best value ever, according to additional data from the Federal Statistics Office (FSO) on Tuesday. FSO published the main data of the Swiss Labor Force Survey a month ago.
Only in the last quarter of 2021 did Switzerland have more employees in the service sector: this was the only time the 4 million limit was broken.
The individual service sectors developed differently in the third quarter of 2022: the provision of other services and private households as employers had more employees than ever before.
The same applies to the information and communications industry, as well as the provision of freelance, scientific and technical services. The Arts, Entertainment and Recreation industry was also booming.
In the health and social care sector, 740,000 people worked, 12,000 fewer than in the last quarter of 2021, which held the record. But this is still the second best value ever.
The third quarter of 2022 is also not far from the record quarter at the end of 2021 in the delivery of public administration, education and other economic services. The transportation and warehousing sector is also at the top.
In other service sectors, however, the situation is very different: 578,000 people work in the retail and vehicle repair trade, which is lower than ever before. The number of people employed in the hospitality industry is also very low by historical comparison.
In the second sector, which includes industry and construction, the development is different: the number of people employed in the industry is in the lower third of the ranking, while the construction sector is at the top of the table.
