Apparently unimpressed, Mark van Bommel briefly commented on Friday about the failed robbery of his apartment in Antwerp on Monday. The FC Antwerp coach, currently second in the top division of Belgian professional football, indicated in his preview of the competitive game against Charleroi that he was fine.
“It has implications, it makes sense. You have to get through that as quickly as possible. I did that. I just trained on Tuesday and Wednesday,” said the former Orange international, who was received in the parking garage under his accommodation on Monday evening.
Van Bommel saw an armed robber coming towards him. He then attempted to exit the garage but collided with another parked car. When the alarm went off, the robber decided to flee. “It was shocking,” he said, looking back on the incident.
Van Bommel was extremely satisfied with the actions of the Belgian police. “I want to compliment the police. She was there very quickly. They immediately took action to apprehend the perpetrator. The investigations are still ongoing.”
The Netherlands manager isn’t the first well-known football personality to have been involved in a robbery. Former footballer René van der Gijp, Israeli Eran Zahavi (ex-PSV) and Ajax player Dusan Tadic have also been dealing with robbers recently.
“It has to do with society,” explained Van Bommel, explaining that criminals are increasingly targeting football professionals. “It’s hardened and become more aggressive. It’s no longer fun. I’m attentive myself, always careful. That has now proven its worth.”
