Federal administration burdens the environment more

In total, the federal government registered 22,221 tons of greenhouse gases in 2021 – a year earlier it was only 18,604 tons. Compared to the last year before Corona, 2019 (37,242 tons), the administration is still significantly more environmentally friendly than before. This is evident from the report on the Resources and Environmental Management System (Rumba), which was published Friday.

Air travel (45 percent), heat (27 percent), paper (11 percent) and car travel (11 percent) were the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. Other emissions came from electricity (4 percent) and waste (1 percent).

The Federal Ministry of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS), which has had its own spatial planning and environmental management system (Rums-DDPS) since 2001, is not part of Rumba. It is also on track with its measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption, the department said in a statement.

The “Federal Administration Climate Package” and the “Air Travel Action Plan” have been in effect since 2020. In this way, the Federal Council wants to further reduce the environmental impact of the federal government. With concrete measures, greenhouse gas emissions should be reduced by 9 percent in the period 2020-2023 compared to the base year 2020. The basis for the base year 2020 is not the actual consumption in 2020, but extrapolated measurement data from 2019.
